2005 Training and Development Events

  • June 2005

  • On Monday June 13, VACE hosted a professional development workshop in Northern Virginia. There was a great turn out with 19 VACE members participating. We explored three companies: Booz Allen Hamilton, CGIAMS, and HydroGeologic, Inc. We also enjoyed an indulgent, filling networking luncheon at Maggiano's in Tysons Corner. Special thanks to Mark Clark and Linda Soller and their staff for hosting us. Read how members felt about the day below. "You’ll be sorry you missed it! I really enjoyed every part of the trip. It was great to see BAH from the inside, and I especially appreciated the panel and the tour", Katie Cox, Washington and Lee University.  " I am glad that I was able to attend and get to meet some more people. I’m ready to do it again next summer",  L. Rucker Snead III, Hampden-Sydney College.  " I learned a great deal from all three companies and it was so helpful to network with everyone from VACE",  Sue Story, Virginia Commonwealth University.  " Thanks so much for all of your efforts to make yesterday's employer visitations so productive and enjoyable",  Mary Schilling, College of William and Mary.

2004 Training and Development Events

  • October 2004
    • Thursday, October 28 workshop held at Washington & Lee University .  Dan Kessler, Director of Campus Programs with Action Without Borders/Idealist.org, facilitated a presentation on careers in nonprofit and public service environments to approximately 20 VACE members. We learned about the variety of services and resources his organization offers to help students understand and connect with opportunities in nonprofits, particularly through their web site, http://www.idealist.org. The Idealist career Center section on the web site includes job and internship listings, informational interviews with people in a variety of careers, and information on year-of-service programs and work abroad programs. In addition, final touches are being made to http://www.idealistoncampus.org.  Following Dan’s program, an informal discussion continued over lunch about nonprofit careers as well as trends and issues facing career services offices.
  • June 2004
    • The June 11th 2004, workshop was held at Randolph-Macon College.  Dr. Mike Aamodt was the presenter for the workshop.  He is the chair of Radford University’s Industrial/Organizational Psychology program.  This fast-paced and entertaining presentation focused on the best ways to recruit and select employees.  The presentation began with a discussion of recruitment trends and how the use of employee referrals results in higher quality employees.  The presentation then moved to a discussion of the selection techniques that best predict performance and the care that must be taken with experience requirements. The presentation concluded with a discussion of how rejection letters and the way applicants are treated can affect an organization’s bottom line and future recruitment efforts.

2003 Training and Development Events
