VACE Vitals - Member News and Updates

Greetings!

Welcome to Winter!  It's that beautiful time of year to count our blessings and to be thankful.

It's easy for me to do lately as I have been having the pleasure of working closely with many of the finest career professionals in the State of Virginia.  I am constantly astounded at the level of talent and professionalism that many of you exude.  Thank you so much for being so involved in our state organization!

It's important to exchange information, get to know our colleagues and help define our profession.  I'm excited and encouraged about the new opportunities that we have been developing for members to get together more frequently.  The Northern Virginia region is busy planning an event and we should word on that very soon.  Despite the stormy weather and busy fall schedules, the Greater Richmond area successfully organized an August workshop held at the Richbrau on Cary Street.  A special thanks to Crystal Tull (First Investors) and Wynee Reece (APEX) for their hard work on coordinating this event and to Angela Robinson for speaking!

Again, regardless of your geographical location, please join in on any of the regional VACE activities that interest you.  I am also pleased to have Becca Scott from Virginia Tech leading our training and professional development activities.  If you haven't been involved at the level you'd like to please let me know so we can find a place for you!  An organization is just a collection of people...and we're only as good as our members!

In addition, I am also excited that we had numerous VACE members attend the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers (SoACE) conference.  The SoACE conference was held from 11/27 - 11/30 on the Riverwalk in San Antonio.

SoACE is the result of the new merger between EACE and SWACE (our Southern regional area) and it appears that the merger was a success!  To date, I have been pleased with the contact from numerous state presidents and SoACE representatives!  For a new experience, I highly encourage you to consider attending this regional conference in the future!

So, I am counting my blessings and hope you all take the time to reflect and do the same.  I am amazed that after a dozen years in this field, I still enjoy the opportunity to touch the lives of the next generation and to help shape our future leaders.

Thank you all for all the hard work that you do every day.  Have a wonderful holiday season!

Warmest regards!

Christine Harriger

1st Annual Career Management Center Employer Symposium at Old Dominion University is a Success By Randy Shabro, rshabro@odu.edu

Old Dominion University's Career Management Center (CMC) hosted our 1st Annual Career Management Center Employer Symposium on September 12th, 2007.  Over 50 CMC employer partners and guests attended the day long symposium to network with CMC staff and participate in break-out sessions on various topic areas of interest such as Technologies in Career Services, Alumni Relations, Getting Involved (Branding) with Career Services, Understanding Millennials,  Strategies in Attracting Students to Hard to Fill positions, and Job Posting to name but a few. Our keynote speaker was Universum/Career TV who shared relevant student/employer survey results with the attendees and how employers can create "branding" videos on their CareerTv website. Attendees also toured the new ODU Innovation  Research Park. The day was capped off with an interactive student panel that talked about what they are looking for from employers.  The Symposium was rated by all as a great success and we plan to enhance and expand our 2nd Annual CMC Symposium next year. If you're interested in how we did it, please call Randy Shabro, Director, Employer Programs, CMC ODU at (757) 683-5857 or by email at rshabro@odu.edu.

SoACE Merger off to a Great Start
By Christine Harriger, harrigce@jmu.edu

It appears the merger between SWACE and SACE is off
to a successful start.

The first ever SoACE Conference was held in San Antonio, Texas from 11/27-11/30 in typical "grand" Texas style.  Members enjoyed an opportunity to stay at the fabulous Hyatt Regency Hotel located on the beautiful Riverwalk (the only San Antonio hotel with the actual river flowing through the hotel lobby).

Virginia was well represented at the conference with 35 VACE members in attendance.  Both employer members and college members represented Virginia ranging from colleges such as Virginia Tech, ODU and  JMU to First Investors and Tindall Corporation.  I would like to extend my personal thanks for representing Virginia so well and for supporting our new regional association and merger!  Along with Virginia members, SoACE had members from the following areas:  Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and all consortium areas of Texas.

I highly recommend marking your calendars for the 2009 conference.  It will be held from 12/7/08 - 12/10/08 in Orlando, Florida.  The hotel selected is the Disney Contemporary Resort Hotel - an excellent venue conveniently located in Disney directly on the monorail system. Consider planning ahead and making a long weekend of it by bringing your spouse and/or children as there will be pre and post event events and discount tickets for Disney!   Based on the range of wonderful sessions that were available this year it will be an event you will not want to miss!

Angela Robinson, Keynote Speaker, Discussed Leadership and Accountability at Richmond Workshop in August 2007
By Crystal Tull, recruit.410@firstinvestorscom

On August 21, 2007 from 6-8pm at Richbrau Brewing Company, Wynne Billings, with Apex Systems Inc. and myself (Crystal Tull, First Investors Corporation) organized an event for our local area. We had a keynote speaker, Angela Robinson. Angela is a Principal of Accessing Success, llc. As a nationally recognized certified Newfield Network coach and a member of the International Coach Federation, Angela works with executives to personally and professionally expand the leader that they are. She came to VACE with rave reviews . She was a very engaging speaker  and discussed with us leadership and accountability  as it relates to college students' performance in college and on the job. We had about 12 people attend and I think it was a great success! We will be planning another local area event in the near future.
